Outdoor living space is used year round in South Florida, which means the electrical installation serving it works year round too — and in conditions that are hard on equipment.
Outdoor power is straightforward to do properly and consistently done badly, usually by treating it as indoor wiring that happens to be outside.
What outdoor areas usually need
- Weather-rated receptacles positioned where they will actually be used
- Lighting for the space itself, separate from path and security lighting
- Supply for fans, heaters, screens or audio, where those are planned
- Kitchen or grill area supply, which has its own appliance requirements
- Pool and spa equipment supply, which carries specific bonding requirements
Listing these before work starts avoids the usual outcome: one outlet in the wrong place and an extension cord doing everything else.
Weather rating is not a formality
Outdoor equipment needs enclosures and covers rated for the exposure they actually get. A cover that keeps rain out when closed is not sufficient where something is plugged in permanently — that situation needs a cover that closes over the plug.
In this climate the enemy is not only rain. Humidity is constant, salt air near the coast attacks connections continuously, and direct sun degrades plastics. Equipment chosen for a milder environment simply does not last as long here.
Ground-fault protection outdoors
Outdoor receptacles generally require ground-fault protection. Outdoors is wet, people are often barefoot, and equipment gets handled with damp hands.
Where an outdoor GFCI trips repeatedly, the usual cause is moisture in a fitting or a device — which is information, not a nuisance. Replacing the protection with something that does not trip removes the safety rather than the fault.
Outdoor kitchens and grill areas
An outdoor kitchen is a kitchen with worse weather. Refrigeration, an ice maker, a grill with electronics, lighting and often a television all need supply, and all of it sits outdoors.
Everything needs a rating that suits its position, ground-fault protection applies, and equipment under cover still lives in humid, salt-laden air. Refrigeration in particular deserves its own circuit — sharing it with whatever trips is how a freezer defrosts unnoticed.
Pools, spas and bonding
Anything electrical near a pool or spa sits under bonding requirements intended to keep all conductive parts at the same potential, so no difference exists for a person in the water to complete.
This is not visible once installed, which makes it a poor candidate for informal work and a good reason to have anything altered around a pool checked. Equipment added over the years — a heater, a new pump, lighting — should be brought into the same arrangement rather than simply connected.
Fans, heaters and screens
Outdoor comfort equipment is heavier electrically than it looks, and much of it is not rated for where people install it.
- Ceiling fans need a rating for damp or wet locations depending on exposure, and a fan-rated box
- Patio heaters draw substantially and generally deserve their own circuit
- Motorized screens and awnings need supply at the head of the opening plus control
- Outdoor televisions and audio need weather-rated supply and a route for signal cabling
An indoor-rated fan on a covered patio is one of the most common outdoor mistakes here, and humidity finds it long before rain does.
Storm season and outdoor installations
Anything outdoors is exposed during storm season. Fixtures and their mountings should be secure, covers should close properly, and equipment that can be removed or protected ahead of a storm is worth identifying in advance.
Afterwards, outdoor equipment that has been submerged or driven with water should be assessed before it is relied on again. Water inside a fitting is not always visible and does not always announce itself immediately.

The difference between outdoor wiring that lasts and outdoor wiring that corrodes is specification and installation, not price.
