Home EV charging questions we are asked most
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in South Florida?
An electrical permit is required for electrical work in unincorporated Miami-Dade, and each city in the three counties has its own building department that sets its permit requirements. Florida's EV charging preemption law still lets local governments issue electrical permits and inspect for safety. See EV charger permits in South Florida.
Can my condo association stop me from installing a charger?
Under section 718.113(8), a condo declaration or board cannot prohibit a unit owner from installing an EV charger in their limited common element or assigned parking, though the association can set safety and reasonable architectural requirements. See condo EV charger installation.
Is there still a federal tax credit for a home charger?
No, not for new installs. The 30C credit does not apply to property placed in service after June 30, 2026. See the 30C credit has ended.
Will I need a panel upgrade?
Not always. A load calculation shows whether your existing service can carry the charger, and load management can sometimes avoid an upgrade. See does my panel have room for an EV charger.
Should I get a Level 2 charger or a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
Both run on a 240-volt circuit. A hardwired charger avoids the GFCI and receptacle-wear issues that come with a plug-in setup, while an outlet lets you use a portable connector. See hardwired vs plug-in chargers.
