Questions we are asked about this
Does an EV outlet need a GFCI?
Yes. Under the electrical code Florida currently uses, every receptacle installed for EV charging needs GFCI protection for personnel, usually a GFCI breaker in the panel.
How fast does a Tesla charge on a 14-50?
Tesla's Mobile Connector draws 32 A on a 14-50, which is 7.6 kW at 240 volts. On a 14-30 dryer outlet it draws 24 A.
Can I use my dryer outlet to charge?
It can work, but you either swap plugs daily or add a sharing device. A dedicated 14-50 is simpler if the panel has room. Never use an extension cord or adapter chain.
Why not use a cheap receptacle?
An EV outlet carries high current for hours and gets plugged and unplugged often. EV-rated receptacles are built for that use. Installation quality matters just as much.
Is a 14-50 or a hardwired charger better?
A 14-50 is flexible and portable. Hardwiring allows up to 48 A, avoids GFCI nuisance trips and has no exposed plug outdoors. The right choice depends on your charger and your plans.
Do I need a permit for a 14-50 outlet?
Yes. A new 50 A circuit is permitted electrical work. KRW handles the permit and the inspection.
