What a Level 2 installation involves

What Level 2 means, and why most EV owners end up with one

Level 2 is charging at 240 volts, the same voltage a dryer or a range uses. The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center puts typical Level 2 output at about 7.2 kW, with a range from 2.9 to 19.2 kW, and estimates about 25 miles of range per hour of charging, against about 5 miles per hour from a standard 120-volt outlet (AFDC, electric vehicle charging stations). For a household that drives across the county every day, or runs the AC in the car through a South Florida summer, that difference is the whole point.

A Level 2 installation is not just hanging a box on the wall. It is a new 240-volt branch circuit from your panel to the parking spot, sized to the charger, protected by the right breaker, run in a wiring method that suits the location, and inspected by the building department. The charger is the easy part. The circuit, the panel and the route are where the decisions are. Sizing the circuit: the table we start from

The charger's output current sets the breaker. EV charging counts as a continuous load, so the breaker must be at least 125% of the charger's maximum output: a 40 A charger needs at least a 50 A breaker (NEC 625.41 in the 2020 code Florida uses; Mike Holt, Article 625 summary). Each charger also gets its own branch circuit with no other outlets on it (NEC 625.40, Leviton code reference). Bigger is not automatically better. Your car accepts only up to its own maximum Level 2 rate, so a vehicle limited to 30 A gains nothing from an 80 A charger, as the EPA explains (EPA, charging details). We match the circuit to three things: what the car can accept, what the panel can spare, and how many miles you need back each night. Hardwired or plug-in

There are two ways to connect a wall charger. A plug-in unit rides on a 240-volt receptacle, usually a NEMA 14-50, and can be unplugged and taken with you. A hardwired unit is connected directly to the circuit. Here is how we frame the choice:

• Output. Plug-in chargers top out at 40 A on a 14-50. Anything above that is hardwired: the Wallbox Pulsar Plus offers 48 A hardwired only (Wallbox datasheet), and Tesla's Wall Connector is hardwired only.
• GFCI. Every receptacle installed for EV charging must have ground-fault protection for personnel (NEC 625.54, Leviton code reference). Many chargers have their own ground-fault detection, and the two can interact. ChargePoint recommends hardwiring its Home Flex where a GFCI would cause nuisance trips (ChargePoint Home Flex installation).
• Portability. If you rent, or expect to move, a plug-in unit comes with you and a NEMA 14-50 outlet stays behind as a feature of the house.
• Outdoors. A hardwired charger on an exterior wall has no plug face exposed to rain and salt air.

The panel check

Before we quote a charger circuit we look at the panel, because it decides whether the job is simple. We check four things:

1. Service size and existing load. A 32 A charger running all night adds real load on top of AC, water heater, range and pool pump. We do a load calculation, and where it is available we can use your utility demand history: the 2020 code allows an existing service to be evaluated from 12 months of maximum-demand data (NEC 220.87, determining existing loads).
2. Physical space. A 240-volt breaker needs two spaces. Full panels sometimes have room after consolidation; sometimes they do not.
3. Panel condition. South Florida has plenty of 1950s to 1980s housing with original equipment. Corrosion from humidity and salt air, overheated bus bars and obsolete brands change the plan.
4. Distance. A long run from panel to parking spot means larger wire, more material and a longer route to plan.

If the panel is too small, the answer is not always a new service. A load management device, such as one that cuts the charger when the panel reaches 80% of its main breaker rating (RVE DCC-12 specification), can sometimes fit a charger on the existing service. Permit and inspection, handled by KRW

A Level 2 charger circuit is permitted electrical work. Miami-Dade's building department states plainly that an electrical permit is required for electrical work (Miami-Dade electrical permits), and each Miami-Dade municipality has its own building official, so the office depends on your address (Miami-Dade, how to apply for a permit). Florida's 2024 preemption law did not remove this: the state rule that followed confirms local governments may still require electrical permits and inspections for charging stations (Rule 5J-28, F.A.C.).

Garage, carport or driveway

Where the charger goes changes the materials. In a garage the charger usually sits on the wall nearest the car's charge port, and the circuit runs through the wall or in surface conduit. Tesla's Mobile Connector manual, for instance, asks that the outlet be at least 18 inches above the floor and within about 13 feet of the charge port (Tesla Mobile Connector manual).

Outdoors, we pick equipment rated for it. Tesla's Wall Connector is Type 3R / IP54 (Tesla specifications); Emporia and Grizzl-E list NEMA 4 or UL Type 4 enclosures (Emporia, Grizzl-E). How the job runs

1. Tell us the basics. Your car, where you park, and a photo of the panel with its door open and the main breaker label visible.
2. Site visit and load check. We look at the panel, the route and the mounting spot, and confirm the circuit size.
3. Written scope. Breaker, wire, route, mounting, and whether any panel work is needed.
4. Permit. We file with your city or county building department.
5. Installation. Circuit, breaker, charger mounted and connected, settings configured for the circuit.
6. Test. We start a charging session with your car where possible.
7. Inspection. We meet the inspector and close the permit.
