On any project involving walls being opened, the electrical design is the part that decides how the finished space actually works — where you can plug something in, what switches on from where, and whether the property can take what you add in five years.
It is also the part most often left until the walls are already open.
Design starts with how the space is used
Good electrical design is not a standard number of outlets per room. It comes from how a space is actually occupied — where furniture goes, where people work, which doors get used at night, what equipment lives where.
Walking the space and describing the day is more productive than a specification, and it is what produces switching that makes sense rather than switching that meets a minimum.
Load assessment for what is coming
The service has to carry today's loads and tomorrow's. Vehicle charging, a pool, an addition, a larger cooling system, a workshop — each is far cheaper to allow for now than to retrofit.
This is where a design either creates headroom or quietly removes it. A panel installed with no spare capacity turns the next small addition into a service project.
Circuit separation is a design choice
How circuits are divided decides what happens when one trips.
- Refrigeration on its own, so it survives whatever else fails
- Network and security equipment separated from general outlets
- Home office on a circuit that is not shared with the laundry
- Outdoor circuits kept distinct, since they are the ones most likely to trip in weather
- Large appliances individually supplied
None of this costs much at design stage, and all of it is what makes a fault an inconvenience rather than an event.
Switching and controls
Two-way switching at both ends of a hallway or a staircase, at a bedroom door and the bedside, and at both entrances to a room, is a small amount of cable and a daily difference.
Where dimming or smart controls are wanted, the wiring has to suit them — including a neutral at switch positions. Deciding that at design stage costs nothing; discovering it afterwards means opening a wall.
Coordination with everything else
Electrical work shares space with plumbing, mechanical services and structure, and it usually has the most flexibility — which is why it tends to be the one that moves.
Getting positions agreed early is what avoids an outlet behind a wardrobe, a switch behind a door swing, or a fixture that lands off-center once the ceiling is set out.
Designing for a coastal property
Local conditions belong in the design rather than in the installation.
Anything outdoors or in an unconditioned space needs equipment rated for humidity and, near the coast, salt air — including the enclosures and connections rather than just the visible fittings. Where service equipment is located matters for both weather exposure and flood risk.
Concrete construction affects routing, so cable paths are planned into the work rather than cut into finished structure. It also affects wireless coverage, which is why network provision belongs in an electrical design here more than it might elsewhere.
What a good design produces
- A layout showing outlets, switches, fixtures and equipment positions
- A schedule of circuits and what each serves
- Confirmation the service supports the design, with headroom stated
- A clear division between what is being installed now and what is being provisioned for
That last item is worth insisting on. Provision — a cable run, a spare way, containment — is cheap now and expensive later, and it should be a deliberate decision rather than an omission.
Getting a design done
The best time to plan electrical work is before anything is opened up, and the second best is while it is open.
