Lighting is the part of an electrical installation people actually experience every day, and it is the one most often decided by the fixture alone.
The fixture matters. So do the circuits behind it, the switching, and whether the light is the right quality for what the room is used for.
Layers rather than a single source
A room lit by one ceiling fixture is lit evenly and badly. Lighting that works is usually built in layers.
- Ambient light for general level
- Task light where something specific happens — counters, desks, reading positions
- Accent light for architecture, artwork or planting
Layers need switching that lets them be used independently, which is a wiring decision made before the walls close, not a fixture decision made afterwards.
Color temperature and rendering
Temperature
Warmer light suits living spaces and bedrooms; cooler, brighter light suits kitchens, garages and work areas. Mixing temperatures within one sightline is what makes a room feel subtly wrong, and it is the most common lighting mistake in an otherwise good renovation.
Rendering
Color rendering describes how accurately colors appear under the light. It matters wherever people judge color — kitchens, bathrooms, dressing areas, anywhere artwork hangs — and it is worth specifying rather than discovering.
Getting the quantity right
Too much light is as common a mistake as too little, and it is more expensive. A room lit to the level of a retail floor is uncomfortable to live in and costs more to run.
The useful discipline is to work from the task rather than the room. Ask what actually happens in each part of the space, put the light where that happens, and let the general level be lower than instinct suggests. Adding a layer later is easy where the switching allows it; removing glare from an over-lit room usually means starting again.
This is also where dimming earns its place — it lets one installation serve both cooking dinner and sitting down afterwards.
Dimming is a wiring question
Dimming needs compatible fixtures and a compatible control, and the two have to suit each other. Mismatches produce flicker, buzz, a limited range, or lights that will not go low without cutting out.
Some controls also need a neutral conductor at the switch location, which many older switch boxes do not have. That is very cheap to address while walls are open and disproportionately annoying afterwards.
Rooms with specific requirements
Kitchens
Task light on the counters is the requirement, and the usual failure is a single ceiling fixture that puts the cook's shadow exactly where they are working. Under-cabinet lighting solves it, and it needs supply and switching planned in.
Bathrooms
Light on the face rather than the top of the head, which means light at the sides of a mirror rather than only above it. Fittings must be rated for the zone they sit in, and circuits require ground-fault protection.
Bedrooms and living areas
Warm, controllable and layered, with switching that does not require crossing the room in the dark. Two-way switching at a doorway and a bedside is a small piece of wiring and a daily improvement.
Recessed lighting and the ceiling above it
Recessed fittings sit inside the ceiling, which means they interact with insulation, with the space above, and sometimes with air conditioning ducting.
Fittings need to be rated for the conditions they sit in, and the layout has to account for what is actually up there. In a property with concrete construction that constraint is real rather than theoretical, and the layout is easier to adapt on paper than on site.
Planning a lighting project
The best time to plan lighting is before the walls close, because switching and circuits are what make a layered scheme possible.
