Efficient appliances are worth having, and the claims made for them are worth reading carefully. Consumption depends on how an appliance is used and installed at least as much as on its rating.
This covers what efficiency ratings actually tell you, and the installation details that determine whether an appliance delivers what it promised.
What a rating measures
Efficiency figures come from standardized testing, which is what makes comparison between models possible. It also means the figure describes a defined test rather than your household.
Comparing like with like is the useful discipline: two appliances of the same type and capacity can be compared meaningfully, while a rating on a larger appliance may reflect efficiency per unit of capacity rather than lower consumption overall.
Running hours matter more than rating
The appliances worth focusing on are the ones that run constantly rather than the ones that draw heavily in bursts.
- Refrigeration, which never stops
- Pool pumps, which run long hours in this region
- Air conditioning, the largest load in most South Florida homes
- Water heating, depending on the type installed
An efficient appliance used briefly saves little. A modest improvement in something running continuously compounds all year.
Installation changes real consumption
Efficient equipment installed badly is not efficient equipment.
Refrigeration needs the clearances the manufacturer specifies, because restricted airflow makes it work harder — and a refrigerator in a hot garage in a South Florida summer runs far more than the same unit in conditioned space. Ventilated appliances need their ventilation to actually work. Equipment on an undersized or shared circuit may not perform as intended at all.
The electrical requirement often changes
Replacing an appliance with a more efficient one frequently changes what the circuit has to provide — sometimes downward, often upward, and occasionally to a different arrangement entirely.
Induction cooking is the clearest example, needing a substantial dedicated circuit where a gas hob needed almost nothing. Heat pump equipment and larger capacity appliances can change requirements too. Checking the specification before purchase avoids a delivery that cannot be connected.
Cooling is where the real money is
Given how long the cooling season runs here, air conditioning dominates most households' consumption, and no appliance replacement elsewhere changes that arithmetic.
The electrical contributions are control and correct connection: thermostats placed where they read the room, configured for the equipment actually installed, zoned where a property warrants it. The rest — sizing, ducts, insulation — belongs to other trades and matters just as much.
Standby and always-on equipment
Individually negligible, collectively continuous. Network equipment, entertainment systems and appliances in standby draw around the clock.
Switched outlets or scheduling for equipment that genuinely does not need to run overnight is a modest and honest saving. It is worth doing and not worth overstating.
Water heating deserves its own look
Water heating is often the second largest electrical load in a home after cooling, and it runs regardless of season here.
The electrical considerations are real: heat pump water heaters have different supply requirements to conventional electric units, and tankless electric units can demand a very large supply indeed — sometimes more than an existing service can reasonably provide.
That last point catches people out. A tankless unit is efficient in the sense that it heats only on demand, but its instantaneous demand can be substantial, and confirming the service can carry it belongs before purchase rather than after delivery.
Deciding whether to replace
- How many hours a year does it actually run?
- How old is it, and has its consumption drifted upward?
- Does the replacement need different electrical provision?
- Will it be installed somewhere that lets it perform — clearance, ventilation, temperature?
- Is there a larger load elsewhere that deserves the attention first?
