Reducing what a property consumes is mostly unglamorous work, and in South Florida the shape of it is unusual: cooling dominates the year, so the measures that matter most are the ones that reduce or better control cooling and lighting.
This covers what is genuinely within an electrician's scope, and what is not.
Start by finding out where it goes
Efficiency work without measurement is guesswork. A property's consumption is dominated by a small number of loads, and they are not always the ones people assume.
Utility data shows the total. Circuit-level monitoring, either at the panel or on individual circuits, shows the distribution — which is what turns a general intention into a specific plan.
Lighting is the easiest real saving
Lighting is the load most directly under an electrician's control, and the savings are straightforward.
- Efficient fittings, chosen for output and color quality rather than wattage alone
- Controls, which address lighting that runs when nobody is present
- Occupancy sensing for transitional spaces — garages, hallways, storage
- Daylight response, which suits South Florida's long bright days
- Outdoor lighting on timers or photocells rather than memory
Controls usually save more than fittings, because a fitting can only be efficient while it is on.
Cooling is the biggest load
Air conditioning dominates consumption here, and much of what improves it is not electrical work — insulation, glazing, shading, duct sealing and correct system sizing all sit with other trades.
The electrical contribution is control: thermostats placed correctly and configured for the actual equipment, zoning where a property warrants it, and ventilation controls that manage humidity as well as temperature. Comfort here depends on humidity at least as much as on the number on the thermostat.
Standby consumption adds up quietly
Equipment drawing small amounts continuously — network equipment, entertainment systems, chargers, appliances in standby — is individually trivial and collectively constant.
Switched outlets, timers or smart plugs for equipment that genuinely does not need to be on overnight address it. This is a modest saving honestly described, not a transformative one.
Efficient appliances, and when to replace
Newer appliances generally use less, but replacing something that works has its own cost. The case is strongest for appliances that run constantly — refrigeration, pool pumps — and weakest for those used briefly.
Pool pumps deserve a mention in this region: they run long hours, and variable-speed equipment generally uses far less than fixed-speed alternatives running flat out.
What to be skeptical about
Efficiency attracts confident claims. Two are worth treating carefully.
Devices promising large savings simply by being plugged in do not do what they claim. And any projection expressed as a percentage without reference to the property's actual consumption is a marketing figure rather than an estimate.
A credible plan starts from measured consumption, addresses the largest loads first, and states what it does not know.
Efficiency work that is actually electrical
It is worth being clear about scope, because efficiency advice often blurs trades.
- Lighting, fittings and controls
- Circuit-level monitoring so consumption can be seen rather than guessed
- Thermostat and zoning wiring, placement and configuration
- Switched outlets and scheduling for standby loads
- Supply for efficient equipment such as variable-speed pool pumps
Insulation, glazing, shading, duct sealing and system sizing are the other half of the picture and belong with other trades. A contractor who claims all of it is overreaching.
A sensible order of work
- Measure, so the plan targets the actual distribution
- Lighting and controls, which are the most reliable electrical savings
- Cooling control and configuration
- Standby loads and scheduling
- Appliance replacement where the item runs continuously
