Kitchens ask more of an electrical installation than any other room in a house. They concentrate the largest appliances, the most water, and the most simultaneous use into one space.
That is why kitchen renovations so often turn out to involve more electrical work than expected — the room's requirements have moved on considerably from when most kitchens were wired.
Islands, peninsulas and where the outlets go
An island is the position most often got wrong, because it is furniture until it is built and then it is permanent. Supply has to reach it under the floor or through the structure, which is straightforward during a renovation and disruptive afterwards.
Where the island carries a hob, a sink or a second refrigerator, its electrical requirement is substantial rather than incidental, and it has to be settled before the floor closes.
Outlet placement on an island is a compromise between usability and appearance. Options that keep them off the visible faces exist, and each has implications for access and cleaning that are worth weighing before choosing on looks alone.
Why kitchens need dedicated circuits
Large appliances generally need circuits of their own rather than sharing with the rest of the room. Sharing is what produces a breaker that trips whenever two things run together.
- Ranges and ovens, which are among the largest loads in a home
- Dishwashers and waste disposals
- Refrigeration, which benefits from not sharing with anything that trips
- Microwaves, particularly built-in units
- Counter outlets, which need enough capacity for everything used at once
The practical consequence is that a kitchen adds circuits to the panel. If the panel has no spare spaces, the kitchen project quietly becomes a panel project, and it is much better to know that at design stage than after the cabinets are ordered.
Water is why the protection requirements are stricter
Kitchen receptacles serving counter surfaces generally require ground-fault protection, because the combination of water, metal and hand-held appliances is exactly the situation GFCI devices exist for.
Placement matters alongside protection: outlets need to be usable without trailing cords across a sink or a hob, and that is a layout decision made with the kitchen designer rather than afterwards.
Plan the appliances before the wiring
The single most common kitchen problem is wiring installed before the appliances were chosen. Induction versus gas, a single oven versus a double, an American-style refrigerator with an ice maker plumbed and powered — each changes what has to be in the wall.
Appliance specifications state their electrical requirements. Getting those to the electrician before first fix is the cheapest thing anyone can do on a kitchen project.
The order that saves money
Kitchen electrical work happens in two visits, and what falls between them decides the cost.
- First fix, before surfaces close: circuits run, boxes positioned, supply to appliance positions
- Cabinets and surfaces installed
- Second fix: devices, fixtures and appliance connections
Anything remembered after first fix means opening finished surfaces again. That is why appliance choices, island position, and where the coffee machine will actually live are electrical questions, not just design ones — and why a walk-through with the electrician before first fix repays itself.
Lighting a room people work in
A single central fixture lights a kitchen badly, because whoever is working at the counter stands between it and their work.
Under-cabinet task lighting fixes that, and it needs supply and switching designed in. Above it, a general layer for the room and, where there is an island or table, something over that. All of it benefits from being separately switched, and from a color temperature consistent across the room.
Getting the electrical side right first
Kitchen electrical work is largely invisible once finished and expensive to revisit, which makes it the part worth planning earliest.
