Security equipment is only as reliable as the power and connectivity behind it. Cameras that lose power, a doorbell that drops off the network, a gate that opens during an outage — these are electrical problems that present as security failures.
This covers what security equipment needs from a property's electrical installation, and the decisions worth making before anything is mounted.
Power at the right places
Every device needs supply where it is mounted, and entrances are rarely where circuits already run.
- Cameras at entrances, driveways and outbuildings
- A doorbell or intercom at the main entrance, sometimes with an existing transformer to replace
- Gate and garage operators, which need a dedicated supply
- A location for the recorder, hub and network equipment with power and ventilation
- Network points where a wired connection is worth having
Wired or wireless
Battery and wireless cameras are simple to install and depend on someone maintaining them. Wired cameras need cabling and then largely look after themselves.
For the devices that matter most — the ones covering entrances, and the recorder itself — wired is the more dependable choice. Concrete block construction, common here, attenuates wireless signal more than timber framing does, so coverage that would be fine elsewhere can be marginal.
Recording, storage and where it lives
Cameras produce footage that has to go somewhere, and that decision has electrical consequences.
A local recorder needs a permanent supply, ventilation, and somewhere secure — a recorder mounted by the front door is the first thing taken. Cloud storage moves the dependency to the network connection instead, which means the network equipment becomes the thing that must stay up.
Retention is worth deciding deliberately too: how many days of footage, at what quality, across how many cameras determines the storage, and running out silently is the common failure. Most people discover their retention window when they go looking for something from last week.
What happens during an outage
This is the question worth asking before installation, and it matters more in a region with a hurricane season.
- Cameras and recorders stop unless something is holding them up
- Network equipment stops, so remote access goes with it even if the cameras have power
- Powered gates need a defined behavior — and a manual release someone knows how to use
- Electric locks fail either locked or unlocked by design; that choice is a safety decision, not a preference
A small uninterruptible supply covering the hub, the recorder and the network equipment is usually the difference between a system that rides out a short outage and one that does not.
Where cameras and cabling actually go
Placement decides whether footage is useful, and it is easier to get right before anything is mounted.
- Cover approaches and entry points rather than open expanses of driveway
- Mount high enough to be out of reach, low enough to record a recognizable face
- Avoid aiming into the sun at the hours it matters, which washes out the image
- Keep cable runs concealed and protected — an exposed cable is the obvious thing to cut
- Bring runs back to one protected location for the recorder and network equipment
Concrete construction affects this too: routing cable is more involved, which is another reason to settle positions before work starts rather than during.
Lighting is part of the system
Lighting does more for security than most equipment, and it is frequently ignored in favor of cameras.
Well-placed light at entrances and approaches removes hiding places and makes camera footage usable — an unlit driveway produces a recording of nothing. Motion-triggered lighting at the perimeter and steady, low-level light at doors is generally more effective than floodlighting everything, which produces glare and deep shadow in equal measure.
Getting the groundwork right
Security installations succeed or fail on the electrical work behind them: supply where the devices actually go, wired connections where reliability matters, and a decided answer for what happens when the power stops.
