Battery storage has become a realistic option for South Florida homes, and the interest here is usually less about energy costs than about what happens when the power goes out during hurricane season.
The electrical considerations are close to those for a generator, with some differences worth understanding before committing.
Backup, not independence
A home battery stores a finite amount of energy. How long it lasts in an outage depends entirely on what it is asked to carry.
Refrigeration, lighting, network equipment and phone charging can be sustained for a useful period. Air conditioning is a different proposition — it is the largest load in most South Florida homes, and running it from storage shortens the window dramatically.
Deciding what the battery covers is the same exercise as sizing a generator, and it should happen before equipment is chosen.
How it connects
Like a generator, a battery system must be isolated from the utility supply when it is supporting the property, so it cannot energize utility conductors during an outage.
That is done with transfer equipment and, usually, a dedicated panel carrying the circuits being backed up. It is permanent electrical work requiring permitting and inspection.
Where it can go
Battery systems have siting requirements covering ventilation, temperature, clearances and proximity to living space, and local requirements vary.
Heat is the consideration people underestimate here. A battery in an unconditioned garage in a South Florida summer is working in a hot environment, which affects both performance and service life. Flood exposure matters for the same reasons it does for a generator.
Compared with a generator
- A battery is silent, needs no fuel, and takes over instantly
- A generator runs as long as it is fueled, which matters in a multi-day outage
- A battery has a finite store and needs something to recharge it
- A generator needs exercising, servicing and fuel management
Neither is simply better. In a region where restoration after a major storm can take days, the distinction between finite storage and a fueled generator is the one that matters most.
What it does the rest of the year
Outside outages, a battery can shift when a property draws energy — storing at one time and discharging at another. Whether that is worthwhile depends entirely on the tariff a property is on, and that is a question for the utility rather than the electrician.
It is worth being clear-eyed here: for most homes, the case for storage in this region rests on resilience during outages rather than on routine savings.
Recharging during a long outage
This is the question that decides whether storage suits a property, and it is the one most often skipped.
A battery alone is a finite store: once it is empty, it stays empty until utility power returns or something recharges it. In a multi-day outage that distinction becomes the whole story.
Systems paired with an on-site generating source can recharge during the outage; systems without one cannot. Either way, understanding how the equipment behaves when the store is exhausted — and what it prioritizes as it depletes — is worth establishing before purchase rather than during a storm.
Questions worth answering first
- What has to keep running, and for how long
- Whether air conditioning is included, since it changes the sizing entirely
- Where the equipment can be sited within temperature and clearance requirements
- How it recharges during an extended outage
- What the existing panel and service can accommodate
