Appliance installation looks like plugging something in, and for a lot of appliances it is. For the large ones it is electrical work, and it is where a surprising number of kitchen problems start.
This is about connecting appliances properly: what needs hard wiring, what needs its own circuit, and what to check before an appliance is delivered.
Hard wired or plugged in
Some appliances connect to a plug and outlet. Others are connected directly into a junction or a dedicated connection point, generally because of their size or where they are installed.
Which applies is set by the appliance's own requirements rather than preference. Where an appliance is hard wired, replacing it later is electrical work rather than a delivery — worth knowing when planning a kitchen that will be updated in ten years.
The appliances that need their own circuit
- Ranges, ovens and cooktops, particularly induction
- Dishwashers and waste disposals
- Built-in microwaves
- Refrigeration, which is worth separating so it survives unrelated trips
- Wine storage and ice makers, which run continuously
Sharing is what produces the classic complaint: everything works until two things run together.
Check before delivery, not after
The commonest and most avoidable failure is an appliance arriving that the existing supply cannot serve.
- The electrical specification, from the appliance documentation rather than the showroom
- Whether the existing circuit and its protection suit that specification
- Whether the connection point is where the new appliance needs it
- Whether the panel has capacity if a new circuit is required
- Clearances, since some appliances need space around the connection
Ten minutes with the specification sheet prevents a delivery that cannot be installed.
Induction is the usual surprise
Replacing a gas hob with induction is the single most common cause of unexpected electrical work in a kitchen. A gas hob needs a small supply for ignition and controls; an induction hob needs a substantial dedicated circuit.
That frequently means new cable from the panel, and where the panel is full it means panel work as well. It is entirely manageable when known in advance and disruptive when discovered on installation day.
Laundry and utility appliances
Washing machines and dryers combine water, heat and motors, which is why their circuits and protection matter.
Electric dryers in particular are a large load and are normally supplied individually. In this climate, ventilation for a vented dryer matters too — a poorly vented dryer adds heat and moisture to a space that is already being cooled and dehumidified.
Outdoor and garage appliances
Refrigeration in a garage or outdoor kitchen, freezers in unconditioned space, and equipment in outbuildings all need supply suited to their location rather than an extension cord from indoors.
This is a common informal arrangement and a poor one: cords running under doors get damaged, and equipment outdoors needs weather-rated supply with ground-fault protection.
Ventilation, water and the connections around appliances
Appliances that produce heat or moisture put demands on the space as well as the circuit.
Built-in ovens and refrigeration need the clearances the manufacturer specifies, because restricted airflow shortens the life of the appliance and puts a warm appliance next to a connection. Dishwashers and ice makers combine water with a connection point, so the connection belongs where a leak will not reach it.
In a humid climate this is not a marginal consideration. Warm, enclosed, damp spaces are exactly where terminations corrode, and an appliance space is often all three.
After installation
Two habits are worth adopting. Label the circuit at the panel, so the appliance can be isolated without guessing. And keep the documentation, since the next person to work on it will want the specification.
If a newly installed appliance trips its breaker repeatedly, that is a fault to investigate rather than a quirk — either the appliance, the circuit, or the protection is telling you something.
Getting appliances connected properly
Most appliance problems are electrical groundwork problems, and nearly all of them are cheaper to solve before delivery.
