There is a difference between a breaker that trips once during a storm and a breaker that trips again the second you push it back. The first is a circuit doing its job under an unusual load. The second is a circuit telling you something specific, and it will keep telling you until somebody listens.
This is the most common call we get where the homeowner has already tried to solve it — usually by resetting the breaker several times first. Here is what it is actually saying.
The one-reset rule
Reset it once. If it holds, note what was running when it went and keep an eye on that circuit. If it drops again immediately, stop.
Repeated resetting does not fix anything. A breaker opens because current went somewhere it should not have, and pushing the handle back does not change where that current is going. What it does change is how many times the fault gets energized. Every attempt puts the full fault current back through whatever is causing it — a pinched cable, a wet connection, a failing motor — and heat builds at that point each time.
A breaker is also a mechanical device with a service life measured in operations. Cycling it against a live fault wears out the one component that is protecting the circuit.
Three faults, three different messages
An overload. The circuit is carrying more than it is rated for. This one usually has an obvious story: a space heater and a microwave on the same kitchen circuit, or a window unit that started this summer on a circuit that coped last summer. It trips after a delay — seconds to minutes — because the breaker is responding to accumulated heat rather than to an instant event.
A short circuit. A hot conductor is touching a neutral or another hot conductor. This trips instantly and hard, sometimes with a sound you can hear. Nothing you unplug will help if the fault is in the wiring itself.
A ground fault. Current is escaping to ground — through a damp junction box, a nicked cable inside a wall, a corroded outdoor fixture. In South Florida this is the one that surfaces after the wet season, and it is why outdoor, bathroom and kitchen circuits carry GFCI protection in the first place.
Telling these apart from the outside is guesswork. Telling them apart with a meter is a short job, and it is what a troubleshooting visit is for.
What you can safely narrow down first
Before anyone comes out, you can cut the search down without opening anything:
- Unplug everything on the affected circuit — every lamp, charger and appliance — then reset once. If it holds, plug things back one at a time. Whatever drops it is your fault.
- If it will not hold with nothing plugged in, the problem is in the wiring, a switch or a fixture. Leave it off.
- Note whether the tripping started after heavy rain, after a new appliance arrived, or after work was done nearby. Timing narrows this faster than anything else.
- Look at the breaker itself. One that feels loose in the handle, or will not stay in the reset position at all, may simply have failed.
When the breaker is not the problem
Sometimes the circuit is healthy and the panel is not. Breakers age, and one that opens well below its rating is worn out rather than protective. Corroded bus bars, aluminum branch wiring and panels whose breakers are no longer manufactured all produce the same symptom from a different cause.
The other version is a panel that is full and has been made to stretch. Circuits get doubled up, a heavy appliance ends up sharing with a bedroom, and the result is a breaker that trips whenever two ordinary things happen at once. That is a capacity problem rather than a fault, and it gets solved at the panel instead of on the circuit.
When it stops being a repair
Any of these alongside a tripping breaker changes the priority:
- A burning smell near the panel or near outlets on that circuit.
- A panel cover, breaker or receptacle that is warm to the touch.
- Buzzing or crackling from the panel.
- Scorch marks or discoloration at an outlet.
- The breaker tripping with no load on the circuit at all.
Those are not troubleshooting symptoms. Leave the breaker off and treat it as something to handle now rather than over the weekend.
If it will not hold
A circuit that refuses to stay on has already done the hard part — it found the problem. What is left is locating it, and that is the straightforward half.
