Plenty of household electrical tasks are reasonable to do yourself. Plenty are not, and the boundary is not intuitive — some jobs that look simple carry real risk, and some that look involved are genuinely straightforward.
This is a practical view of where the line sits and why.
Generally fine
- Replacing a lamp, or a like-for-like fixture with the circuit off
- Resetting a breaker once to see whether it holds
- Testing GFCI devices with their test buttons
- Replacing a plug on an appliance cord
- Labeling the panel, which is genuinely useful and involves opening nothing
Circuit off means the breaker off and verified — not the wall switch, which only interrupts one conductor and leaves the rest live.
Not worth doing yourself
- Anything inside the panel
- Adding or extending circuits
- Replacing outlets or switches where the existing wiring is unclear
- Any work outdoors, in a garage, or in a wet location
- Anything involving a pool or spa
- Work on a property you are about to sell, where it will be inspected
Why the panel is different
The service conductors entering a panel remain energized when the main breaker is off. There is no switch inside the property that changes that, and no reliable way to tell by looking.
That is the specific reason panel work sits with an electrician regardless of confidence. It is not a matter of skill at making connections.
Older wiring makes assumptions unsafe
In older properties, wire colors may not follow current conventions, a circuit may be fed from more than one direction, and the ground may be absent even where a three-prong outlet suggests otherwise.
Aluminum branch circuits, found in some homes from a stretch of the 1960s and 1970s, need connectors and devices rated for them. Treating them like copper is exactly how a connection starts heating.
Permits apply regardless of who does the work
Requirements attach to the work, not the person. Homeowner-performed work that needed a permit and did not get one is unpermitted work, and it surfaces at a sale or an insurance claim like any other.
For anything beyond like-for-like replacement, it is worth asking the local building department what applies. The answer is free and it is definitive.
Local conditions raise the stakes
Humidity, salt air and heavy rain mean outdoor and garage circuits here need equipment rated for the location and ground-fault protection. Improvised outdoor wiring degrades quickly in this climate.
Pools add bonding requirements that are invisible once installed and genuinely hazardous to get wrong, which puts anything near a pool firmly outside DIY territory.
Tools and testing
One thing genuinely worth owning is a reliable non-contact voltage tester, and one habit worth adopting is proving it works on a known live source before and after using it.
The error that causes most household electric shocks is assuming something is dead. A tester that was already faulty confirms exactly what you hoped it would, which is why it gets checked against something known to be live first.
Beyond that, the equipment that makes electrical work safe is largely about verification rather than assembly — which is a fair description of why the trade is licensed at all.
Stop if
- Anything is warm, discolored, or smells of burning
- The existing wiring does not match what you expected
- A breaker will not stay reset
- You cannot confirm what is de-energized
None of those are reasons to proceed carefully. They are reasons to stop.
When to hand it over
The useful test is whether you can confirm what is live and whether the work needs inspecting. If either answer is uncertain, it belongs with an electrician.
