Questions we are asked about this
What should I check before calling an electrician?
Check whether the neighbors have power, look for a tripped breaker and reset it once, and press RESET on the GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outside. Then try a lamp you know works in the dead outlet.
Is it safe to reset a breaker myself?
Resetting a breaker once is fine: push it fully to OFF, then to ON. If it trips again right away, leave it off and call. Do not reset it if the panel is hot, buzzing or smells of burning.
When should I skip the checks and call right away?
If there is a burning smell, heat, smoke, sparks, buzzing from the panel, lights brightening and dimming, or water near electrical equipment. If there is smoke or fire, leave and call 911.
What information should I have ready for the electrician?
What is affected, when it started, what was running, anything you noticed such as heat or a smell, any recent work on the house, and access details. Photos of the panel help a lot.
Why do you ask for a photo of my panel?
The panel's brand and age tell us which replacement breakers fit and whether it is a model that needs a closer look, so we can bring the right parts.
