In South Florida, a panel upgrade rarely starts with the homeowner deciding they want one. It usually starts with a letter from the insurance company after a 4-point inspection, a new air conditioner or EV charger that the old panel cannot carry, or a breaker that keeps tripping. By then the questions are practical: who can do the work, how the power gets shut off and turned back on by FPL, and how long the house will be without power.
This list covers eight licensed electrical contractors across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties that advertise panel upgrades and replacements. We also explain what insurers look for, how FPL fits into the job, and what to ask before you sign. - Panel work on their own site. Every company has a page describing panel replacement or service upgrades, not only a line in a services list.
- A published license number where possible. Most of the companies below show a Florida electrical contractor license on their site. Where one does not, we say so. Verify any license yourself on the DBPR lookup.
- A real, current business. Each company has a third-party listing such as the BBB or Yelp.
- Spread across the three counties. Panel jobs involve local permits and local FPL crews, so we included contractors based in each county.

1. KRW Electric
KRW Electric Company LLC is a licensed electrical contractor (EC13012832) owned by Kyle White and based in Miami Beach, serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. It replaces and upgrades panels for homes, condominiums and businesses, and handles the permit and the inspection on its jobs.
KRW assesses the whole service before quoting: the incoming service rating and how much of it the property already uses, the condition of the enclosure, bus, breakers and terminations (corrosion, overheating, damaged conductors, obsolete equipment), the circuits the panel already feeds, and the panel location, which affects working clearance, the service entrance route and weather exposure. That decides whether the right answer is a like-for-like replacement, a larger service, a subpanel, or repairs to the existing equipment. When the wiring behind the panel is also near the end of its life, KRW handles whole-home rewiring as a staged job. KRW is rated 5.0 on Google across 118 reviews.
Best for: owners who want the panel, the service and the loads assessed together, including EV chargers and pool equipment. 2. Elekron Electric
Elekron Electric Inc is based in Coral Gables and shows license EC13009214 on its site. Its panel replacement page describes upgrades for overloaded panels and for older equipment, naming Zinsco and Federal Pacific, along with corrosion and damage, and covers permits and inspection. The site lists service areas across Miami-Dade and Broward, and separately lists FPL overhead-to-underground service work.
Best for: Coral Gables and central Miami-Dade homeowners. Worth knowing: its listed service area runs through Miami-Dade and Broward, so Palm Beach owners should look elsewhere on this list.
3. Solid Power
Solid Power Inc is a Hialeah electrical contractor with license EC13008432 on its homepage, which says it has been licensed since 2012. It handles panel upgrades, tenant build-outs, generators and EV chargers across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. Its guide to Federal Pacific panel replacement in Miami describes coordinating the power shutoff with FPL and handling City of Hialeah permits.
Best for: Hialeah and west Miami-Dade homeowners with a Federal Pacific panel. Worth knowing: it also does commercial and generator work, so ask who will be on your job and when.
4. Klean Power Electric
Klean Power Electric, Inc. is based in Southwest Ranches. Its panel replacement page describes FPL coordination on panel swaps and service upgrades, replacement of Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Sylvania and Challenger panels, 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades, and fuse box and subpanel work, for homes and businesses in cities such as Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Davie and Weston.
Best for: southwest Broward homeowners replacing a legacy panel or fuse box. Worth knowing: we did not find a license number on its site, so confirm the license on the DBPR lookup before you hire.
5. Dinnen Electric Service
Dinnen Electric Service, Inc is a Fort Lauderdale electrical contractor showing state license EC0002462 and serving Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach; its homepage says it has served the area since 1982. Its residential services page discusses identifying Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels in older South Florida homes and reconfiguring panels for added load.
Best for: Fort Lauderdale area homes and small commercial buildings. Worth knowing: its panel content sits on a general residential services page, so describe your panel and loads in detail when you ask for a quote.
6. Solomon Electric
Solomon Electric LLC is based in Hollywood and shows license EC13012419 on its 100-amp to 200-amp service upgrade page. The page describes FPL coordination and permit processing, names Federal Pacific, Zinsco and Challenger as panel brands flagged by inspectors and underwriters, and covers Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach for residential and commercial work.
Best for: Broward homeowners moving from 100-amp to 200-amp service, often ahead of an EV charger or a larger air conditioner. Worth knowing: a 200-amp upgrade is not always required; ask for the load calculation that supports the size.
7. Gator Electric & Communications
Gator Electric & Communications Inc is in Lake Worth Beach and shows license EC0002289 on its site. Its panel upgrade page covers 100-amp to 200-amp and 200-amp to 400-amp service upgrades and Federal Pacific and Zinsco replacement, and says it pulls the permits and coordinates the FPL inspection, across Palm Beach County for homes and businesses.
Best for: Palm Beach County homes, including larger homes that need 400-amp service. Worth knowing: its service area is Palm Beach County, so Broward and Miami-Dade owners should choose a closer contractor.
8. Trophy Electric
Trophy Electric LLC is a Boca Raton electrical contractor showing license EC13010278 on its site. Its Federal Pacific and Zinsco replacement page is written around insurance: it explains that replacement involves pulling a permit, coordinating a temporary power disconnect with FPL, installing a new load center, and re-terminating and labeling every circuit. It serves Palm Beach and Broward.
Best for: homeowners whose insurer has flagged the panel and who need permit and final inspection paperwork. Worth knowing: it is a smaller, newer company, so ask about scheduling if your insurer has set a deadline.
What insurers look for
Most Florida insurers ask for a 4-point inspection on older homes, covering the roof, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Citizens Property Insurance publishes its 4-point inspection form, which asks the inspector for the main panel type (circuit breaker or fuse), total amps, whether the amperage is sufficient for current usage, and the panel's age, brand and model, and to tick hazards such as double taps, blowing fuses, tripping breakers, corrosion, over fusing and scorching. Citizens' form states that agents may not submit applications for properties with electrical systems not in good working order or with existing hazards or deficiencies.
Some carriers go further and exclude panel brands outright. Universal Property & Casualty's Florida underwriting binding guidelines (the edition dated October 2018) list "No Fuses", "No Federal Pacific (includes Stab Lok), Zinsco, Sylvania-Zinsco, or Challenger-Zinsco Boxes" and a minimum of 100 amps. Rules differ by carrier and change over time, so ask your agent exactly what the insurer requires and get it in writing before the work starts.
On Federal Pacific specifically, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission closed its investigation of FPE Stab-Lok breakers in 1983 without a recall; its 2011 revision notes it closed the matter without making a determination as to their safety. The practical issue for most South Florida owners is insurability rather than a recall notice.
How FPL fits into a panel upgrade
Your electrician does the panel work, but FPL controls the power to the house. According to FPL's project types page, projects that do not need FPL equipment upgrades may only need a service disconnect and reconnect while the work is done, and after a panel or meter can change the local building department has to inspect the work before FPL reconnects. Upgrades that need new FPL equipment require a power outage while it is installed. Ask your contractor who books the FPL appointment and how the inspection will be timed, because that sets how long you are without power.
How to choose a panel upgrade electrician
- Verify the license on the Florida DBPR lookup at myfloridalicense.com. Panel and service work should be done by a licensed electrical contractor.
- Ask for the load calculation behind the recommended size. A 200-amp service is common, but the size should follow your loads, not a default.
- Confirm the permit and inspection. Insurers often ask for the permit and final inspection as proof the work was done. Homeowners can pull permits for their own single-family home under Florida Statute 489.103, but a contractor normally pulls the permit for panel work.
- Ask about the FPL schedule and how long power will be off.
- Ask what else might be found. Opening an old panel can reveal aluminum branch wiring, double taps or missing grounding. A good contractor explains what is unsafe, what is not compliant and what is simply old.
- Get the scope in writing, including the panel brand, breaker types, any surge protection and whether the meter can or service entrance is included.
FAQ
My insurer flagged my panel. How fast do I need to replace it?
That depends on the insurer's letter. Some set a deadline for renewal; others will not write a new policy until the work is done. Share the letter with your contractor so the permit and FPL appointment can be scheduled around it.
Do I need a 200-amp service?
Not necessarily. Many homes do fine at their current size with a new panel. A load calculation that includes air conditioning, water heating, cooking, pool equipment and any planned EV charger answers the question.
Will my power be off during a panel upgrade?
Yes, for part of the job. FPL disconnects the service and reconnects it after the work passes inspection. Your contractor can tell you the expected window.
Is Federal Pacific equipment recalled?
No. The CPSC closed its investigation in 1983 without a recall. Many insurers still decline homes with these panels, which is why they are commonly replaced.
Can I add an EV charger instead of upgrading?
