Home vehicle charging is a large, sustained load — often the largest single addition a property has made in decades, drawing heavily for hours at a time, frequently overnight while everyone is asleep.
That is why the installation deserves care, and why the shortcuts people are tempted by are the ones worth understanding.
Sustained load is the key difference
Most household loads are intermittent. Charging is not: it draws close to its maximum continuously for hours.
That is exactly the condition that finds weak connections. A marginal termination that has coped for years with intermittent use can heat steadily under a sustained load, which is why the circuit, its protection and its terminations all matter more here than for a typical outlet.
Why an extension cord is not an option
Charging through an extension lead or a domestic power strip is the most common dangerous shortcut. These are not designed for sustained high current, and the failure mode is heat at the connection.
Where a portable unit is used, it should be plugged directly into a suitable outlet on a circuit that can carry it. Anything more permanent deserves a dedicated installation.
The panel and the circuit
A dedicated circuit sized for the equipment is the baseline, with protection to match and conductors appropriate for both the load and the length of the run.
It also has to fit within what the service can carry alongside everything else — which in South Florida means alongside air conditioning for most of the year. Where capacity is tight, load management can let charging work around other large loads instead of requiring a service upgrade.
Outdoors, carports and this climate
Equipment mounted outside or in a carport is outdoor electrical equipment, and it needs enclosures and connections rated for sun, humidity, driving rain and, near the coast, salt air.
Standing water is the other consideration. Equipment and connections should sit clear of where water collects, which in much of the region is a genuine design constraint rather than a precaution.
Living with the cable
The cable and connector are the parts that wear, because they are handled daily and treated roughly.
- Support the cable so it is not hanging from the connector
- Store it off the ground rather than coiled in standing water
- Keep it out of the path of vehicles and doors
- Inspect the connector occasionally for damage, heat marks or corrosion
A damaged connector or a cable with heat marking is a reason to stop using it, not to work around it.
Signs something is wrong
- The outlet, plug or connector is warm to the touch after charging
- Discoloration at the outlet or on the connector
- The breaker trips during charging
- Charging is slower than it was, with no change to the vehicle's settings
- Any smell of burning near the equipment
Each of these indicates a connection under stress. Charging should be stopped and the installation checked.
Garages and where the vehicle sits
A garage housing a charging vehicle should have working smoke detection, and the vehicle should be parked so it can be moved rather than boxed in.
It is also worth keeping the area around the equipment clear. A charger surrounded by stored boxes is both a fire consideration and an obstacle to reaching the isolation if it is ever needed.
Getting it installed properly
Vehicle charging is straightforward to install well, and the reasons to do it properly are the same reasons it is worth doing at all: it runs hard, for hours, unattended.
