Home charging is where most electric vehicle owners end up, because it removes the trip to a public charger entirely. The vehicle side of that is simple. The electrical side is where the decisions are.
The question is almost never whether a charger can be installed. It is what the property's existing service can support, and what has to change if it cannot.
Charging levels, briefly
Level 1
A standard household outlet. It works, requires nothing installed, and adds range slowly enough that it suits low daily mileage or a second vehicle rather than a primary one.
Level 2
A dedicated 240-volt circuit and equipment rated for it. This is what most home installations use, and it is the level that makes overnight charging comfortably cover normal daily driving.
What the property's service decides
A charger is a large, sustained load, and it is added to whatever the property already runs. In South Florida that already includes air conditioning for most of the year.
So the assessment starts with the incoming service rating, how much of it is genuinely in use, and whether the panel has capacity and a spare breaker space. Depending on the answers, the work may be a new circuit, or it may reach the panel and the service.
Where capacity is genuinely tight, load-management equipment can allow charging to work around other large loads rather than requiring a service upgrade. Whether that is the right answer depends on the property.
Where the equipment goes
Placement affects both cost and daily use. The distance from the panel to the charger drives the circuit length and the conductor size, and the route has to get there through whatever the building is made of.
Outdoor and carport installations need equipment rated for the location, which in a coastal, humid environment is not a detail to skip. Salt air is hard on outdoor equipment and its connections.
Worth deciding before anyone quotes
- Where the vehicle actually parks, including whether that changes with a second vehicle
- Whether the equipment is hardwired or plugs into an outlet, which affects both the circuit and any future replacement
- Whether a second vehicle is likely, since running one circuit while the walls are open is far cheaper than running a second one later
- Whether the charger needs to be shared, metered, or restricted
Answering these first tends to produce a quote that survives contact with the project.
Living with it afterwards
Two things surprise people once the equipment is in.
The first is that charging speed is limited by whichever is smaller — the circuit or the vehicle's onboard charger. A larger circuit does not make a vehicle charge faster than its own hardware allows, which is worth knowing before paying for capacity that cannot be used.
The second is that the cable and connector are the parts that wear. They get handled daily, dragged across concrete and left in the sun. Mounting the equipment so the cable is supported rather than hanging, and stored off the ground, meaningfully extends its life here.
Condominiums and shared parking
This is the common case in much of South Florida, and it is a different project. Parking is often common property, the electrical supply serving it belongs to the association, and metering the energy used by an individual space has to be resolved before anything is installed.
The practical route is usually to establish what the association permits and how supply and metering will work, and only then design the installation. Doing it in the other order tends to produce a plan that cannot be approved.
Starting from the electrical system
The equipment is the easy part of an EV charging project. What determines the scope is the service feeding it.
